The Media, health and mental health promotion in SSA

30 July, 2019

Dear HIFA colleagues,

Insofar as much as the lack of political will is an important hindrance to mental health development in Subsaharan Africa(SSA). It should be underscored that access to reliable information and availability of health and mental health information is also a very much unaddressed determinant in enabling SSA countries to have robust health and mental health systems.

Could the absence of readily access to and availability of quality health and mental health information affect health policy decision making in SSA? I believe so. The role of an educated and informed media to educate and inform the general public and enlighten decision makers is very important. I believe cost effective too. The aim been to improve the health and mental health literacy of citizens.

Cameroon is gradually equipping itself with tools to make health and mental health information accessible and available to all. The HIFA in Cameroon and MHIN-Africa have been very instrumental in this.

The creation of the Association of Science Journalists and Communicators for the Promotion of Health in Cameroon, member of the World Federation of Science Journalist is very timely.

I am honoured to tell you that I have been appointed SGA of the aforementioned association.

I kindly request to be in contact with any person, organization interested in supporting our/my work in health and mental health promotion. We at the AJC-PROSANTE, HIFA, MHIN-Africa are determined to bring Cameroon to a sustainable health system because health and mental health information would have been made available and accessible.

Kindest regards,

PS
