Nigeria Health Watch - Let's talk about sex: What do Nigerian adolescents know about sexual reproductive health?

21 July, 2019

I have experienced this and seen it destroy/limit people's lives.

As a youth in Nigeria, I have witnessed people first hand that are sexually active but are completely ignorant of the necessary steps, strategies and methods needed in remaining 'safe and Healthy from STD's and STI's.

To make matters worse, After knowing they health status, let's say the individual is positive of hepatitis B, the person is not concerned about preventing the spread rather became very uncannily and begins to spread the infection.

Also any form of education or guidance given to this young men and women gets them agitated, defensive and sometimes angry.

It's really difficult helping people who already have their mind in one direction with no desire to be helped.

I wish there can solutions.

I believe that if parents, guardians and teachers are encouraged through seminars, programs, meetings and the like to embrace sex which is natural and explain to their wards at an early age (When they begin to recognise and ask questions about their genitals and sex), then the level of ignorance and misconduct would be less.

Thank you for your time.
