Improving quality care in rural settings: a personal experience in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Most rural provinces in DRC have limited staff, while major cities like as Kinshasa or Lubumbashi have many health personnel. Because of this, I decided to work in one of the poorest provinces of the country. A wide range of issues such as, for example, lack of medical insurance to poor roads, limited skilled health workforce and infrastructure make access to quality healthcare difficult in these rural setting.

As a result, people self-medicate, visit traditional healers or stay at home to give birth even if a skilled birth attendant is indicated. Finding solutions to these problems became my passion.

National Quality Policy and Strategy (NQPS)

The WHO Regional Office for Africa organized a 3-day workshop to strengthen the capacity of Ministries of Health in setting their national directions on quality, with the Integrated Health Department at WHO headquarters. Representatives from seven countries gathered in Harare, Zimbabwe on 27-30 August, 2019 to undertake a detailed examination and gain an in-depth understanding of each of the essential elements of the WHO national quality policy and strategy (https://who.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540192c501e50b6f7f2ffe21d...) process...

Infection prevention and control/Water sanitation and hygiene (IPC/WASH)

In mid-September, 100 people gathered in Zambia for the global event on WASH in Health Care Facilities. 21 countries detailed their efforts and commitments to implementing the core elements of the resolution and a number of learning agenda items were advanced through 8 learning laboratories which were focused on the 8 practical steps to improve WASH in HCF (https://who.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540192c501e50b6f7f2ffe21d...) . Additionally, WHO is requesting feedback on the indicators for monitoring WASH in delivery rooms are now available. The 2019 WHO Global Survey on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Hand Hygiene is extended until November 2019! This survey reflects on the current level of progress of infection prevention and control (IPC) programmes and hand hygiene activities in health care facilities in the context of the annual WHO hand hygiene global campaign (5 May 2019) (https://who.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540192c501e50b6f7f2ffe21d...) . It encourages and supports local assessments of IPC and hand hygiene activities using standardized and validated tools, in the context of the regular work of the IPC teams/committees and the development of local improvement plans...



In July 2019, the GLL hosted a lunchtime seminar at WHO headquarters (https://who.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=540192c501e50b6f7f2ffe21d...) . The seminar presenters explored how compassion is a key driver for quality health services and discussed the challenges related to compassion in global health. Cognitive awareness, emotional resonance (empathy), and action, were also discussed as components of compassion...
