WHO: Deaths from Democratic Republic of the Congo measles outbreak top 6000 (2)

8 January, 2020

Thanks for posting this, Neil. As far as I can recall, this is the first posting on HIFA about the measles outbreak in the Democratic Republicof the Congo. In contrast, we have had countless reports on HIFA about the Ebola situation there. Note that the 6,000+ deaths from measles in DRC in 2019 is more than all the Ebola deaths ever recorded in DRC since records began in 1976. It makes me wonder about this fascination with Ebola: is measles not spectacular enough? [*see note below]

2. Chris's post raises wider issues around community perception and lack of trust in public health efforts. In one of the messages above (BMJ: Ebola in Sierra Leone and DRC) Professor Eugene Richardson of Harvard University notes in a BMJ interview: "People have been dying from malaria, measles, and armed conflicts for years, and there's a sense that no one's come to help. And then all of a sudden they see people from abroad with SUVs and money. They feel like all of this is being foisted on them. They feel like we're the ones spreading Ebola..."]
