Abolition of nuclear weapons

25 October, 2020

Dear HIFA members

At this dark time when the world and all its peoples are suffering badly from illness, inequalities, malgovernance and corporate deceit, something amazing happened yesterday -

Honduras became the 50th state to ratify the UN Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) which will now come into effect in 3 months

This marks the first huge step on the route to abolition and will place huge pressure on the nuclear weapons states to seriously end the arms race and recognise the appalling potential of nuclear weapons as a humanitarian issue.

TPNW would not have come about without the long standing advocacy of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (www.ippnw.org) and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (www.ican.org) who placed the public health menace of weapons of mass destruction at the top of the world agenda.

If your country is not one of the ratifying states (find the full list on the ICAN website above) or if it is a nuclear weapons state, please write to your government representation to request them to back the ban!
