The Department of Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health (EIH/HA) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) launches the Virtual Seminar Series on COVID-19, SDG-health related targets, and Equity and invites to the Inaugural Seminar: Epidemiology and Inequalities in Brazil: The EpiCOVID19 Study

Prof. Dr. Cesar G Victora – 20 July 2020; 10:30 AM EDT

Prior to the identification of severe acute respiratory syndrome type-2 coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2, and the declaration of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, progress on Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 (SDG-3): Ensuring healthy living and promoting the well-being of all at all ages, although positive in certain areas, was clearly insufficient and unequal between and within countries in the Region. The current context imposes new challenges on people's health and well-being expectations, threatening the achievement of SDG-3 targets while leaving no one behind. This series of virtual seminars opens up a regional reflection-discussion-action space on the intersectionality of COVID-19 with the SDG-3 health-related targets and the reduction of social inequalities in health, highlighting the primacy of PAHO missional objective to promote health equity.

This inaugural Series Seminar will feature the distinguished participation of Prof. Dr. Cesar Victora, Director Emeritus of the International Center for Health Equity at the Federal University of Pelotas, RGS, Brazil – WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre on Health Equity– who will present the results of the EpiCOVID19 Study: from Oiapoque to Pelotas, the first and, to date, the only large-scale epidemiological study on the prevalence, epidemiology and social inequalities associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in three survey rounds in each of the country's 133 most representative cities.
