Solutions to urban air pollution: lessons from Accra, Ghana

Tuesday October 6

9 a.m. EDT (1 p.m. UTC)

The Urban Health (Urban MNCH in sub-Saharan Africa) Community of Practice webinar on October 6 at 9 a.m. EDT will present solutions to air pollution, including specific examples from an urban air pollution pilot project in Accra, Ghana, conducted by the WHO’s Urban Health Initiative (UHI) and work in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The CIRCLE Project, in conjunction with USAID, wrote the LMIC Urban Air Pollution Solutions technical document in 2019 as a framework for developing solutions to air pollution, with a particular focus on including the health sector in the solution. This framework applies widely to urban air pollution. As a specific example of addressing air pollution, the WHO’s Urban Health and Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) Reduction Project in Accra, Ghana has been engaging key stakeholders in the health, transport, waste, and energy sectors to improve air quality as a health intervention.

Presentations will include an introduction to air pollution solutions followed by a description of the SLCP project in Accra and a reflection on the applications of implementation research to answer key learning questions. The session will be moderated by Cudjoe Bennett from USAID’s Health Research Program.
