Mental health and Development (2)

15 July, 2019

In our centre, we are energised by Didiers' latest posting on community mental health. We say congratulations to him and his team for sharing what reads like a very successful outing in neighbouring Cameroon.

We are excited because we agree with his call for development of community mental health service in LMICs so that the condition of mental illness is demystified, destigmatised and should receive deserved attention in country health plans and budgets. The situation in Nigeria is perplexing and tragic for potential users and families, and indeed the society in general because even though a doyen of the medical profession, Late Professor A. Lambo, former Deputy Director of WHO and the pioneer Editor-In-Chief of BMJ West Africa Edition ( 1995-2003) pioneered Community Mental Health Service in Nigeria in 1961 based in Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun state, Nigeria, his country still tragically lacks such a service. Recognition and acclaim followed his innovation from around the globe, there is a Lambo Centre in Cambden, London UK in his honour, but Nigeria does not operate a community mental health service!!.
