Just published in BMC Health Research Policy and Systems, this paper reports on the methods and analysis of grants for biomedical research by 10 major funders of health research, exploring what is being funded, by whom and where. The data were collected from the World RePORT and analyzed by the WHO Global Observatory on Health Research and Development.

This paper made an important contribution to automated data mining methodologies applied to health data by developing and testing an approach to classify text-based data (titles or abstracts) into health categories when this categorization is not readily available, such as in this case. The Observatory is making the standard list of health categories and the automated tool available on its website to encourage further data analysis and knowledge sharing in this field.
