It is salutary to reflect that this decline comes almost 70 years after the publication in the British Medical Journal of Richard Doll’s paper showing that the risk of developing carcinoma of the bronchus increased in proportion to the amount smoked. Why so long – almost three generations? I hope we can anticipate that now, with the internet, research results will be reflected in people’s behaviour without such a long interval.
