Dear Child Health Task Force Members,
We are pleased to share materials from the inaugural Fighting for Breath: Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia, held January 29-31 in Barcelona, Spain.
Each year 800,000 children under five die from pneumonia, more than the combined child mortality from HIV, TB, and malaria. It also is a sign of inequality, disproportionately affecting the poorest and most vulnerable children in low- and middle-income countries.
Therefore in the GFP Declaration, the attendees committed to "unprecedented levels of collaboration" for the following actions:
Develop and implement pneumonia control strategies
Prioritize vulnerable populations
Finance pneumonia control and treatment adequately
Accelerate breakthrough innovations
Track progress with transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness
Strengthen partnerships

Comment (Neil PW): In addition to the measures described, deaths from childhood pneumonia are largely avoidable through timely provision of simple, inexpensive antibiotics that are often locally available but simply not provided in time due to lack of basic healthcare knowledge among families and frontline health workers, leading to indecision, delays, incorrect diagnosis and ineffective treatment.
Best wishes, Neil
