Many environmental hazards may be encountered by children in humanitarian
crises. Although risks from infectious diseases in humanitarian crises have
been extensively recorded, little attention has been paid to risk from
exposure to toxicants in the water, air, food, or resulting from wartime
activities. This article describes some important environmental hazards to

She served as the Senior Officer for Environmental Health Research at the World Health Organization in Geneva from 2009 to 2012. She is the founding editor of the influential book Pediatric Environmental Health (a 4th edition was published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2019). She is Co-Chair of the Environmental Health Strategic Advisory Group for the International Pediatric Association.
