*Spotlight: Cataract (25) Need for cataract - request for advice (3)

11 October, 2026

Dear Dr Garba,

In 2010 I had increasing problems driving at night. Traffic lights in the distance became triangular and related visual effects.

In UK winter as a community mental health nurse problematic - especially driving around Skelmersdale, UK, notorious for getting lost (pre-satnav).

My opticians provided new spectacles to no avail. Returning, another optician 'saw' the problem. Cataracts and I had my GP refer me to opthalmics.

It was worrying, so I can understand your feelings. I was 'young' too for this 'problem' - sat from 0715 with other more senior people. My problem was double - left eye first.

My brother collected me outside the hospital at 1000hrs.

A Mr Heaven operated, then Mr Mars some 6 weeks later. Work unstood regards my being 'sick'.

The difference was remarkable! I still rejoice and am so grateful to the team and NHS (then - private now..?). I was moved (wept!) at the detail of a bird flying by, the tones of bark on trees, insects lit by the sun, the moon, a motoway snaking off in the distance.

There were some side effects, floaters, as I needed a laser two years post-op:

My right eye is slightly blurred (still have regular vision checks) - but I'm saving this!

A Consultant Psychiatric colleague noticed the difference - I'd looked 'lost' before then...

If you can place your trust in your local health services - I would say - do so.

I recognised the risk associated with impaired vision - reading drug instructions, conveying patients - impact on insurance...

I hope you are able to seek help - or at least have an assessment, especially affected by glaucoma as you note?

Best wishes to you.
