Advocacy on formula advertising(12)

7 August, 2020

The issue of breastmilk substitute marketing companies like Nestle breaking the International code on marketing of breastmilk substitute depends on the centre and country.

For us in Calabar East of Nigeria we don't receive gifts from them. The Paediatric association of Nigeria is very active and strict on this.

For this year's breastfeeding week because of the COVID 19 pandemic, I was able to hold media briefing on breastfeeding, in conjunction with the primary healthcare agency.

We as Paediatrician should please continue to advocate for the baby friendly hospital iniative as I noticed that the breast feeding rates have dropped in LMIC. Advocacy in the primary healthcare centres will go along way to help restore proper /exclusive breastfeeding among our our mothers.
