Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) (3)

26 April, 2025

Hello!

There is a couple of aspects that a clinician observes in practice and I am sure most clinicians will relate.

1. Lack of adequate skills to determine with certainty and consistency the absolute indications for antibiotics when patients present with symptoms suggestive of infection.

2. Pressure from clients to get prescriptions for antibiotics

3. Purchasing antibiotics over the counter without prescriptions from qualified healthcare providers.

Colleagues can add more items on the list. But these factors need to be addressed to protect the available antibiotics and populations from antimicrobial resistance. The measures that will be put in place will also in turn protect new antibiotics that will be discovered in the future.

Unless the practices that led us to where we are are addressed discovering new antibiotics and distributin them, alone will not be the ultimate solution to antimicrobial resistance.

Thank you
