As someone who has been leading Telemedicine for last 27 years and Patient Safety for around 21 years, I would like to comment on this post.

While we should definitely condemn this tragic incidence during a Teleconsultation, we should also remain cognizant that the conventional model of in person delivery of healthcare has huge patient safety issues. WHO says that around 10% of patients are harmed while in a Hospital due to preventable medical errors; 3rd leading cause of death in the US is due to preventable medical errors; diagnostic errors, which is the theme of WHO for this year, are to the tune of around 30-40%; infections in hospitals (in person visits) are also huge; etc.

Telemedicine reduces these preventable medical errors, albeit not completely so even during Teleconsultation we will still have some of the diagnostic errors, medication errors, etc which are already happening at an alarming level in the conventional in person model
