*Cervical cancer (46) Q2: What questions do people commonly ask about cervical cancer screening and treatment?

24 October, 2026

Dear HIFA colleages,

Welcome to week 2 of our in-depth exploration on Understanding information needs for improving uptake of cervical cancer screening and treatment.

I would like to introduce Question 2: "What questions do people commonly ask about cervical cancer screening and treatment?"

In week 1 we have already learned a little from India and Ethiopia:

From India:

“Will it disrupt sex life?”

"Does HPV positive mean cancer?"

From Ethiopia (indirectly via a published paper):

“How do we go to the health facility when the disease does not show any symptoms; we have to be sick to be seen by a health professional”

“what is the point of screening?”

“What do inserting metals do in a woman who did not show any symptoms...?”

“If we go to prevention without any symptoms, what is the point?”

We also learned about concerns about pain during follow-up procedures, effects on sex life, fertility, and whether screening itself could lead to cancer.

We look forward to learn more from other countries.

Many thanks, Neil
