The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) has a working group on Child Death Reviews. I am writing from South Africa where Child Death Reviews have been set up and functioning in some provinces for 10 years +. Child deaths in South Africa are also linked to the factors mentioned in the discussion. However, child abuse and violence against children levels remain high in South Africa. The abandonment of babies and children is also linked to child deaths and is often linked to poverty, abandonment of the mother by her partner, leaving her unsupported materially and emotionally. The response to high levels of child deaths and their prevention requires an interdisciplinary approach in which professionals work together with an appreciation of the knowledge and skills that each profession brings to the table.
