The concept of the "at-risk newborns"(9)

17 January, 2023

Indira and the rest of the CHIFA community,

What an important article.

There are so many key points to it as Indira pointed out. Another one that often gets overlooked is regarding the complications associated with neonatal transport in limited resource settings. For the "At-Risk" infant born at a facility that does not care for the "small and sick" newborn but only for the "well" newborn, there is the challenge of possible transport in a system that may not be equipped to handle the transport of a newborn.

This can put the stable "at risk" newborn at an even higher risk of developing hypothermia-one of the main complications associated with neonatal transport in limited resource settings. Also in many settings, it unfortunately causes a separation of mom and baby being that many systems are not equipped to transport the "well" post partum mom to a higher level of care.

Such an important article.
