COP 28 (6) Further COP follow-up

18 December, 2023

A further declaration at COP28 was the Joint Statement on Climate, Nature and People released by the Climate Change COP28 president (UAE) and the Biodiversity COP15 president (China) which recognised that climate change and biodiversity loss are mutually reinforcing each other.

This innovative statement follows on an editorial with the title “Time to treat the climate and nature crisis as one indivisible global health emergency” developed by the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and now published by over 300 journals around the world. The Joint Statement promotes the editorial’s first conclusion, that climate change and biodiversity loss are a single crisis. We are expecting that the World Health Organization will address the second conclusion of the editorial – that this is a global health emergency – at the next World Health Assembly in May 2024.

Best,

Chris
