IPCRG Qualitative Research School

Our introductory course in qualitative research (https://www.ipcrg.org/conferences/2023-ipcrg-research-school) is integrated into the 2023 Scientific Meeting in Munich. Two remote learning blocks of four hours (31st March and 1st April 2023) take place before the Scientific Meeting, followed by two face to face sessions in Munich focused on coding and analysis and one session after. It forms part of our drive to increase research capacity in primary care and builds upon previous successful research schools hosted at scientific meetings. The course will be led by Dr. Alice Malpass (https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/alice-malpass) of the University of Bristol (UK), who has led previous Research Schools for the IPCRG which have been very well appreciated by those students.

During the school, delegates will learn skills in how to design, implement and write up a qualitative study that answers the following research question: 'A qualitative study exploring the views of primary healthcare professionals on joint working with pharmacists to optimise asthma control'. This topic falls under one of the IPCRG research prioritisation top 10 areas (https://www.ipcrg.org/IPCRG-Research-Prioritisation-2021) . More information, including the learning objectives and skill development, is available here (https://www.ipcrg.org/conferences/2023-ipcrg-research-school) . Register for the course now along with the Scientific Meeting by choosing the ‘Scientific Meeting and Research School’ option.

Boosting Research Careers

The IPCRG is pleased to support Early Career Researchers to build their careers. In two new articles, Zihan Pan, China, and Dragan Gjorgjievsk, North Macedonia, speak about how they became involved in respiratory research, how the IPCRG has helped develop their careers and share advice for people starting off in research. Read their stories here (https://www.ipcrg.org/boosting-research-careers) .

Early Career Researchers interested in showing their research, getting their abstracts peer reviewed, expanding their skillsets and meeting other Early Career Researchers should consider attending the IPCRG 7th Scientific Meeting (https://www.ipcrg.org/Munich2023) and the attached Qualitative Research School (https://www.ipcrg.org/conferences/2023-ipcrg-research-school) .

CHANGE PROGRAMMES

https://www.ipcrg.org/newsletters-and-events/copd-right-care-asthma-righ...

Asthma Right Care & COPD Right Care Strategy

IPCRG has two active Strategy Groups steering our thinking and activity in relation to Asthma Right Care (https://www.ipcrg.org/asthmarightcare) and COPD Right Care (https://www.ipcrg.org/copdrightcare) . In asthma, we are now curating and developing resources to support member countries address the eight person-centred statements (http://www.ipcrg.org/asthmarightcare/asthma-right-care-strategy) on asthma. We’ve had lively debates about how we can add value to support the use of personal asthma action plans and how to offer simple and concise review processes that take account of the limited time available in primary care at the moment – we will keep you updated!

Meanwhile the COPD Right Care (http://www.ipcrg.org/copdrightcare) group has been prioritising the incorporation of the revised GOLD strategy for the diagnosis, management and prevention of COPD 2023 into our tools – including a new spirometry education programme and our COPD Wheel which is being adapted according to GOLD and also to user feedback from our four pilot countries: Portugal, Spain, Brazil and the USA. It is also co-creating a set of person-centred statements and matching primary care competences that will structure future work.

COPD Magazine

Work continues on ‘Breathe Well, Move More, Live Better’ (http://ipcrg.org/copdmagazine) , our digital magazine for people living with COPD. We are currently developing translations into French, Georgian, Greek, Italian, and Portuguese and reflecting on a round of qualitative interviews. Initial findings from this research indicate a desire for more technique demonstrations and positive, patient-led stories. We look forward to additional findings as the data is fully analysed, and our Steering Group will take on these messages as we identify experts, themes and materials for two new editions due for publication in 2023. These will include support on nutrition in COPD – so let us know (mailto:projectsupport@ipcrg.org?subject=COPD%20Magazine%20-%20Nutrition) if this is your special interest!

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tobacco & Climate Change

IPCRG is interested in exploring new ways to engage colleagues and citizens in the discussion about the harms of tobacco smoking and the benefits of quitting. Read this important research (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.8b01533) on the harmful impact of tobacco on the environment and climate, from the growing and curing through to the disposal of butts. One of the authors, Nick Hopkinson, has kindly shared a slide set (https://www.ipcrg.org/resources/search-resources/cigarette-smoking-an-as...) based on this research. We also plan to start a debate on the HIFA.org platform about this.
