Japan bans the corporal punishment of children

29 February, 2020

Dear all

COVID19 has covered the world like a plume of huge volcanic eruptions. This is an urgent issue, especially in Japan. Fortunately, the cases in children seem not to become severe infections.

I want to share good news from Japan.

The Act amending the Child Abuse Prevention Law 2000, which includes revised several articles against corporal punishment, will take effect in April 2020. Before the enforcement of this revision, the government published the guideline for better parenting. The title of this guideline is “For parenting without corporal punishment -Towards the society supporting childcare-”.

We become a member of the states which achieve full prohibition.

I give one comment on it.

The Swedish government banned corporal punishment, including a penalty in 1979. Although the Japanese government also bans it in 2020, it’s without penalty. This is fantastic progress for our society. However, we have to clear one more hurdle to catch up with the Swedish society as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Hajime
