Latest Research results - SARS-CoV and breastmilk

18 June, 2020

Good morning to you all,

Breaking news: Data show transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via breastmilk is very unlikely.

A study, launched by University of California, San Diego, in close collaboration with it’s sister campus in Los Angeles, shortly after the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, has had some great results.

They tested 64 samples from 18 women infected with SARS-CoV-2. Only one of the samples tested positive for presence of viral RNA and none contained active virus (ie, capable of replicating and causing disease).

This is significant as previous studies had reported presence of Viral DNA, but did not test for its’ activity and the sample size was very small.

The new study shows that the presence of viral RNA in breastmilk is not only rare, but also does not represent active virus that can replicate and cause disease.

Funding for the study was provided also by the Family Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation as an unrestricted emergency grant.
