Menstruation (5)

30 October, 2022

I find this topic very difficult to engage with for several reasons including the following:

1. All societies are aware of female biological processes related to menstruation and this is tied to the dignity of women. Why should we openly discuss such a sacred issue which hinges on women's privacy and dignity as if everything is supposed to be up for discussion? There are so many things/issues in life which can be tackled without too much media attention/conferences/discussion forums because doing so is an serious infringement of women's dignity.

2. Personally, I have two teenage girls in high school. My wife, the two girls and their elder brother are obviously aware that at their age the girls go through menstrual cycles. Should we really discuss that issue as a family the way we discuss their other needs like decent clothes, hairstyles and school fees? No.

3. I wonder why this is a public topic in Africa and parts of Asia where, unfortunately, for the love of money whole NGOs have been formed to focus entirely on menstrual issues and sanitary needs of women. I have never heard such a topic discussed in UK, USA, France, Germany or any other Western country. Why? Those countries know that talking about women's private issues in public is another way of denigrating women and trampling on their dignity. It's sickening to see a whole First Lady trying to get media mileage by presenting sanitary ware to young girls on television.
