mHealth-Innovate (60) Strategies to protect patient confidentiality (4) NHS App

1 May, 2025

The BBC program Radio 4 broadcast an evening news program three days ago that included a piece on the use of the NHS App. Over 70% of UK adults have registered to use the app.

Interestingly enough, the report commented on the fact that none of the many, many, replies to the BBC survey declared worries about breaches of their health data. They automatically expected and trusted that their data was used ethically (my word) by the health professionals. This expectation and trust had not been affected after 5 years' use of the national app.

Raanan Gillon wrote that medical ethics had four guiding principles:

Beneficence

Non-maleficence

Autonomy

Justice

These principles seemed to have worked well throughout the implementation of the NHS App.
