mHealth-Innovate (93) UK GMC guidance on decision making and consent (2) Building trust between health workers and patients

30 May, 2025

We are seeing a changing relationship between the health service professional and patient - a partnership of trust. In this case the trust depends on both the patient and health service professional accepting and enacting responsibility for healthcare transactions. This was well described in a doctor and patient's article Towards a partnership of trust published in 2007 in the Medical and Care Compunetics 4 L. Bos and B. Blobel (Eds.) IOS Press, 2007 pp. 108-116 Microsoft Word - 08 Hannan2.doc M

"Abstract: The relationship between doctors and patients is changing as patients live longer but with a greater incidence of chronic disease. An increase in the availability of information about health coupled with the Choice agenda and a patient-led NHS has encouraged patients to learn more about their own health. Patient access to their own GP-held records has led to the development of a Partnership of Trust whereby patients and their clinicians develop a shared understanding of their health and what each do for each other. This could potentially lead to significant patient and clinician benefits ultimately leading to better outcomes for individuals and societies."

We will be covering some of these issues with patient presentations at our hybrid workshop on June 5th and June 6th https://www.eventbrite.com/e/25-years-of-engaging-communities-to-improve...
