Novel Coronavirus (3) COVID19 in Japan

15 February, 2020

Dear all

The number of total cases is 260 in Japan.

It includes the passengers of an international cruise ship.

And an 80s Japanese lady died.

The authorities and medical societies should give the fact and the most effective way to prevent the expansion of COVID19.

The Japanese Pediatric Society (JPS ) published a Q&A (only in the Japanese language) on the 12th of February. It's a meaningful step.

Fortunately, the infected children have not developed in severe physical condition in China.

However, I'm worried about the possibility of human-to-human transmission inside Japan. It may be, means Pandemic Phase 6.

This infection has two faces. One is the side which develops fatal viral pneumonitis. It is 2.3% in total and is 0.5% outside China. The other side is that there are a considerable number of asymptomatic or slight

symptomatic patients who are infectious.

So, it is not easy to control the spread of this infection.

This feature has the similarity of seasonal flu but is more severe than flu because the fatality rate of flu is 0.03% in more than 70s in Japan.

Although we should slow down the speed of its expansion, we should not fear it too much as a highly fatal disease.

What do you think?

Kind regards,

Hajime
