The central and impressive finding was that mothers' self-monitoring of fetal heart was associated with fewer intrapartum stillbirths, fewer neonatal deaths, and less birth asphyxia.
I would like to invite other health professionals to comment.
The paper has wider importance because it is a wonderful example of the benefits of engaging patients in their care. This shifts the patient from being a recipient of care to being a participant. There are so many ways that patients are - or could be - engaged in their own care. Perhaps this could be a topic for a HIFA Spotlight? www.hifa.org/spotlights
