Quality (331) Quality of care and empowerment of health workers, families and patients (2)

9 May, 2022

I just wanted to voice support for Neil’s comment on the Lancet paper which advocated that quality of health services needs to be aligned with empowerment of families, where he noted that “Thinking around quality of care should embrace community and home-based care as well as care at the facility, district and national levels. This implies a stronger focus on patient empowerment.”

Patient empowerment and active engagement in care, including self-care, also demands greater attention to the experience of care as an integral dimension of health care quality and not only a focus on evidenced-based provision of care. Further, health service quality initiatives need to increase patient and community demand for and expectations of quality care through strong community engagement, social and behavior change and communication strategies, and deliberate inclusion of marginalized groups in the design, implementation, and monitoring of health care activities.
