Re: World Breastfeeding Week 2020 - starts 1 August (29)

21 August, 2020

Hi All,

This is a much needed discussion. Here is what I have to say on this topic.

1. I agree with the fact that breast milk is the best source of nutrition for neonates and infants. However, not all mothers have the convenience or ability to breast feed their babies.

2. Caesarian sections further impede the initiation of breast feeding.

3. Not all mothers are full time stay at home moms. Even moms who are full time at home shoulder various responsibilities and perform chores to care for their family. Additionally poor nutrition of mothers and multiple child births makes them incapable of producing enough milk to feed a newborn who needs regular feeds for growth. Hence, the importance of family planning and availability of contraception is essential for women in their reproductive years.

4. Very few countries have provision of paid maternity leave to take care of their newborn. Very little is done even in the developed world to ensure privacy for working lactating moms to feed their newborns or extract milk.

5. Women are humans who are intellectually superior to make their own personal decisions. It can be stated that breast milk is the best but the ultimate choice should always be that of the mom. In the absence of breast milk the babies still need to be fed the best possible alternative. As science advances we can always develop better alternatives.

Sincerely,

Shabina
