Many youth-facing organisations and people who work with children, young people and families rely on perpetrator-focused strategies such as pre-employment screening, Working With Children Checks, criminal history checks, suitability assessments, and reportable conduct plans to keep children safe. But these are not enough. We need to go beyond individual prevention to contextual prevention. A comprehensive approach to the prevention of child sexual abuse needs strategies that are focused on both individuals and contexts. Contextual prevention targets societal contexts (macro) and immediate situations (micro) in which abuse might occur.

Our two-hour symposium presented research on what we know about child sexual abuse, gave an overview of approaches currently used to prevent child sexual abuse, addressed the challenges in implementing contextual prevention, offered practical suggestions on the implementation of the contextual prevention approach, and reviewed possible action and future directions.
