Webinar WHO ABORTION CARE GUIDELINE: overview of recommendations, Carolin Ekman via groups.ibpnetwork.org

WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (NRP SRH) released its new Abortion care guideline on 9th March 2022, which brings together over 50 recommendations spanning clinical practice, health service

delivery, and legal and policy interventions https://srhr.org/abortioncare/

These are the third guidelines in this WHO series. The first was in 2002 and added law and regulations. The second was in 2012 and added human rights into the guidance. This is the third and has more integration of all

of the above. The guidance assumes abortion to be a medical intervention that should be available to all women as such. The report states that 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned and 60% of unplanned pregnancies end in

therapeutic abortion which is a safe procedure.

The objective of the guidance is to enable evidence-based quality abortion globally.

The webinar was very easy to follow and the guidance includes advice on pre-abortion, abortion, post abortion, self-provided abortion, the laws, regulations, human rights, information requirements, possible roles for the

spectrum of health care workers – including patients and abortion’s relationship to Universal Healthcare, financing of services, health worker competences, commodities, some telemedicine recommendations and monitoring

and evaluation.

It is a long time since I did family planning training and family planning but I found this webinar and its subject very impressive.
