Registration open for ICHG 2021 Virtual Winter Meeting - Early Child Development - Silent Emergency or Unique Opportunity

24 September, 2021

Dear Chifa

Following the success of the 2020 ICHG Virtual Winter meeting, attended by participants from 40 countries worldwide, the 2021 Winter meeting will be a hybrid in-person and virtual meeting held on the 12th of November 2021.

The first 1000 days of a child's life are the most crucial period of brain development. Early child development has been acknowledged as the single-most-important predictor of human capital but has lagged behind growth, nutrition, and infectious diseases on the global child health agenda. An estimated 1 in 5 children globally is at risk of not achieving their developmental potential by 5 years of age due to poverty and stunting alone. Up to 80% of these delays are preventable through early interventions if administered during the first 2 years of life.

The 2021 International Child Health Group Conference "Early Child Development: Silent Emergency or Unique Opportunity" brings together the latest early child development research from across the world to answer important questions relating to risk and resilience; screening and intervention; race and ethnicity and the impact of societies in flux on early child development as we know it.

We are delighted to announce that the opening address will be from Dr. Chemba Raghavan, Officer in Charge of Early Child Development, UNICEF, New York. This will be followed by the first plenary session of the day, Early Child Development through the Lifecourse with three world-leading experts sharing lessons from international birth cohorts, insights into Eugenics and Child Development from renowned science journalist and author Dr. Angela Saini, and the final morning plenary Early child growth and development from Professor Jose Villar, University of Oxford.

The afternoon will give participants the opportunity to select two small group workshops from a choice of eleven. These include sessions on careers in global child health, assessment of early child development, and perspectives from carers of children with disabilities in LMICs. Following the workshops, the afternoon includes plenary sessions on Rescuing Child Development: From Science to Interventions. The final keynote of the day will be from Dr. Tarun Dua, Unit Head, Brain Health, WHO, on "The Effects of COVID-19 on Family Life, Caregiving and Child Development".

Early birth discount tickets will be available from 1st September 2021! Attendance is FREE to residents of low and middle-income countries (LMIC). The meetings has been officially approved for Continuing Professional Development from RCPCH.

Tickets and further information about the meeting are available from the conference website.
