The rights to life of children and adults with severe disabilities

15 May, 2026

Dear all

In your country, are the rights to life of children and adults with severe disabilities protected?

In Japan, thanks to the efforts of paediatricians and other medical professionals who have treated children and adults with severe disabilities, rules have been established to protect the lives of those with the most severe intellectual and physical disabilities within the

scope of public health insurance.

However, institutions for them to live in are limited, and many receive mechanical ventilation at home after tracheostomy or laryngotracheal separation surgery, with the dedicated care of their families. Therefore, a society that supports them as a whole is not yet fully developed. However,

I believe that the thought of living together in a society that embraces even those with severe disabilities is quite widespread. At least, their euthanasial treatment for them is not legally permitted.

I believe that a society in which the right to life of people with the most severe disabilities is guaranteed is a society in which everyone can live comfortably.

In your country, are the rights to life of people with such disabilities protected? Are there any ethical views, i.e. Person theory, that negatively consider their lives?

Please let me know if you are willing to share your thoughts or those of your country.

Kind regards,

Hajime
