Spoofing attack - Please be cautious about emails that appear to come from Neil Pakenham-Walsh

17 April, 2023

Dear HIFA colleagues,

Over the past few days I have had a number of people forward me emails that appear to come from me, but are actually from a cybercriminal.

Definition of spoofing: 'Spoofing is a broad term for the type of behavior that involves a cybercriminal masquerading as a trusted entity or device to get you to do something beneficial to the hacker — and detrimental to you'

I have reported this to the UK National Cyper Security Centre.

The emails that have been sent to me contain the following text: "Hope you are in good health? Are you working or on holiday? I need your help for the board, Please email me" and then "Please I’ll need you to process an Urgent payment to a Client/Vendor today".

The emails appear to come from me, except that they are sent from a fake gmail account.

If you receive such message, please forward it to me. Do not click on any links in suspicious messages that appear to come from me.

Please be assured the HIFA forum remains safe and secure. This is a personal cyberattack, not an attack on HIFA. I hope/expect it will fizzle out, but I felt that you all should be aware and prepared if you receive a one-to-one message that appears to come from me.

Thank you

Neil Pakenham-Walsh
