Spotlight: Group B Strep (36) Should there be informed consent before fetal membrane "sweeping" (also known as "stripping") ?

11 July, 2026

Dear colleagues,

I would like to add a second thing to my first answer to Kelli’s question, “What is the one thing about Group B Strep that you wish every pregnant woman and every healthcare professional understood?” I would also like it to be known and understood that GBS can cross intact membranes. In regards to this, I would like to pose the question, “Should there be informed consent before fetal membrane “sweeping” (also known as “stripping”)?

We have a collection of information available on this topic at https://www.groupbstrepinternational.org/prenatal-onset.html#membranestr... . Would be glad for you to share your perspective on this for the forum.

Best!
