Dear CHIFA colleagues,
The results of the SHINE trial have been published in the NEJM today. SHINE looked at whether treatment for children with minimal TB could be reduced from 6 months to 4 months. It found that the four month treatment was as good as the standard six months treatment for children with minimal TB. We have produced various resources that summarise these results:
* NEJM paper https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2104535?query=featured_home
* 4-page briefing paper https://www.mrcctu.ucl.ac.uk/media/2057/shine-briefing-paper-220222.pdf
* Infographic - https://www.mrcctu.ucl.ac.uk/media/2053/shine-main-infographic.png
* Short animated abstract https://vimeo.com/474730726/e10e0b621c
* Film about the results and implications (full length - 12 mins<https://vimeo.com/645164426/251c376917>) (short version - 6 mins<https://vimeo.com/667456124/08ad973889>)
* Image explaining what we mean by minimal TB - https://www.mrcctu.ucl.ac.uk/media/2058/shine-what-is-minimal-tb-for-ind...
Based on these results, the WHO issued a rapid communication saying they would be updating their guidelines to recommend four months treatment for these children. https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240033450
We are keen to know whether the resources we produce are useful to you - if you look at any of them, it would be very helpful if you could spare a couple of minutes to complete this feedback form. https://forms.office.com/r/1jeRpqZTMs
Many thanks,
