Understanding the human impact of nuclear war and mobilising stigma against nuclear states (2) "End nuclear weapons, before they end us"

3 October, 2025

Thanks to Neil for reporting on Carlos Umaña's speech on nuclear war. Neil was also kind enough to mention the editorial we published in over 150 journals in 2023 on nuclear risk and health (https://www.bmj.com/content/389/bmj.r881). Note that there was a second editorial this year, urging WHO to resume its mandate to report on nuclear weapons and health - a mandate that expired five years ago (and the last WHO report on the subject was in 1995). The second editorial ("End nuclear weapons, before they end us" - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41416-025-03067-5) was also published in over 120 journals, and was among the contributing factors that led countries to request WHO to resume its mandate by a resolution adopted in the last World Health Assembly (https://healthpolicy-watch.news/who-gets-mandate-to-update-its-work-on-h...).
