In today’s digital world, health misinformation has become a significant barrier to equitable healthcare access. The rapid spread of false narratives on social media, fueled by AI algorithms, poses serious challenges for public health, including regarding sexual and reproductive health, alongside opportunities. Addressing this issue requires not only factual accuracy but also a deeper understanding of the cultural contexts that shape people's beliefs and decisions about health. In this webinar, Miguel Benasayag, philosopher and psychoanalyst, will share insights from his multidisciplinary research on the limits of traditional approaches to counter misinformation, emphasizing the need to connect health information with people’s lived experiences. He will discuss how AI can both amplify and counter misinformation, while offering solutions grounded in empathy, cultural relevance and human understanding.
Also joining the discussion will be Solange Mbaye, Programme Manager at Amref Health West Africa, Ogechi Onuoha, Programme Director at MSI Nigeria and a member of parliament. Together, they will share local stories on how misinformation can influence access to health and explore how AI can be ethically governed to promote trust, equity and the right to accurate health information. -- Nandita Thatte, DrPH Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health World Health Organization Geneva, Switzerland Email: thatten@who.int www.ibpnetwork.org
