Quality of health services is critical to achieving universal health coverage (UHC). Overall, between 5.7 and 8.4 million deaths are attributed to poor quality care each year in low and middle-income countries, which accounts for up to 15% of overall deaths in these settings. In high-income countries, 1 in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care. Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are among the most frequent adverse events occurring in the context of health service delivery. These infections, many of which are caused by multidrug-resistant organisms, harm patients, visitors and health workers and place a significant burden on health systems, including the associated increased costs.

Join us to explore the interconnectedness of IPC and WASH within communities and healthcare facilities. To bring this to life, the session will consider the importance of a hygienic environment and focus on the health workforce who play a critical yet often invisible and neglected role in supporting quality health service delivery. Experts from WHO, collaborative research institutions and implementation partners, working in the areas of IPC, Quality of Care (QoC) and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) will explain the latest developments, including research that is influencing guidelines, training and advocacy, with an emphasis on addressing the needs of resource-limited settings.

This webinar is the fourth in the series of WHO Global Quality Rounds. We hope that these Quality Rounds will provide a virtual forum to allow individuals from across the world to connect and share experiences on quality of care, challenge each other and spark possible solutions to shared challenges. The WHO Quality Rounds are held quarterly. Each Quality Round has speakers from varied health system environments sharing perspectives on their experience in improving quality of care.
