Two days in February

by Mark Lodge | Feb 3, 2022

This month the World marks its progress towards global cancer control on two dates: 4 February is World Cancer Day and 15 February is International Childhood Cancer Day. These occasions are wonderful opportunities for advocacy, information sharing and celebrating collaborative efforts to address the catastrophic impact of cancer on patients and their families...

At present there are several key cancer meetings like LGCW held annually across the world, but there is little sense of their themes being effortlessly carried over from one meeting to another in a continuum, or of the outcomes of the meetings providing direct benefit to populations. The great challenge for the Global Oncology community is to become a community; a community that helps mobilise high quality evidence, information and experience and that is inclusive, diverse, visionary and non-hierarchical. In this it can learn much from the success and vitality of proven initiatives such as Healthcare Information for all (HIFA). [https://hifa.org]

4 February World Cancer Day and 15 February International Childhood Cancer Day should be marked, celebrated and enjoyed, but they must also inspire us to raise our game during the 363 other days of the year, and strengthen our resolve to work together in common cause against a remorseless and deadly range of diseases.

Comment (NPW): Thank you for this recognition Mark and we look forward to work with you and others to strengthen 24/7/365 communications among the Global Oncology community. Communities of practice in global health have huge potential to maximise impact individually and collectively, which is why HIFA is collaborating with Jhpiego and PATH to support knowledge sharing among global health CoP managers: https://leadernet.org/making-sense-of-communities-of-practice-in-global-...
