World Malaria Day, 25th April (2)

26 April, 2022

Another year, another 'World malaria Day, and the exhortation: 'We recommend a sustainable preventative policy on malaria in Africa that is anchored on high level political commitment, integrated development, increased domestic funding, the training/re-training of healthcare workers and researchers, and sustained community mobilization/engagement and partnership.''

And as I was discussing The Day with some colleagues earlier today, we remembered on the same Call, same day in 2005, the world was reviewing 'Roll Back Malaria' programme on its 5th anniversary. We asked why Africa cannot eradicate Malaria, using the same techniques that America and Europe used to achieve that milestone. especially as many speakers told us that malaria in America and Europe today is 'imported from most probably Africa'. All the speakers also told us that 'No malaria, no mosquito', and the breeding habitats for mosquitos are everywhere in African cities, towns and villages. And that if these habitats are eliminated and basic hygiene and sanitation of the environment are achieved, these vector mosquitos will disappear and malaria will be eradicated!

So what is stopping Africa from eliminating mosquito habitats so that malaria can be eradicated as it happened in America and Europe??
