Young carer survey

24 July, 2025

Dear CHIFA members,

I was surprised by the results of national surveys on young carers conducted by the Japanese government. 5% of Japanese children and young people attending schools are young carers, and a significant number of children are engaged in domestic work, including care work, which is equivalent to child labour.

This is the fact, even in high-income countries like Japan.

If any researchers among you are interested in this issue, please let me know.

The research concept involves gathering questionnaire results from children aged 10 to 15 in your country. The number of cases is at least 200 in each grade, totalling 1,000.

We compare your results with those from Japan. I would like to apply for Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research in Japan and pursue this issue as an international project.

The deadline for the application is August 28th.

The research is scheduled to begin in spring 2026.

Kind regards,

Hajime Takeuchi
