Thanks to Uzodinma Adirieje for his excellent contribution on using AI in developing countries and resource -constrained environments. As he mentions, it is essential that such deployment be carried out "with discipline and contextual fit". The concern remains, however, that among the resources that are constrained in such environments are skilled personnel - that is, humans who are capable of correcting AI when it goes wrong.
The consensus these days seems to be that AI can be a wonderful tool in the hands of people who are alert to the known derailments of AI - such as when it plunges into hallucinations, inexplicable conclusions and poor mathematics. These are known drawbacks that can be managed by trained health personnel. All in all, AI does indeed offer wonderful new opportunities to expand the reach of healthcare, particularly in resource-constrained communities.
