I use Qeios.com Preprint only anymore...
Completely free
Also they have a moderate comapratively charge for editing and actively seeking peer review.
You can still go on to publish your preprint anywhere and pay journals troll Qeios and I recent got picked up and actually paid for a paper I posted on Qeios rather than paying...
When paper jounrals sold adverts, publishing was a different game.
I recall pure peer review being the turnstyle.
Now high and low quality journals both charge.
If you don't have a grant but have an excellent paper your problably hooped.
Then came along Qeios.com
Have a look at their endorsements.
Best,
David
