*Cervical cancer (58) Educating girls about reproductive health and cervical cancer

30 October, 2026

Dear Amal Yusuf,

Thank you so much for the valuable messages that you have sent to HIFA already. I list them below for other HIFA members to review.

We look forward to learning more from your experience as a midwife in Somalia.

Your contributions highlight the need for accessible health information, culturally sensitive communication, community engagement including women's groups, and accessible healthcare services to improve cervical cancer prevention and early detection.

I would like to open discussion on your latest contribution, which emphasises the need 'to educate girls from an early age about their reproductive health'. I invite you and other HIFA members to say more on this important topic.

We would be interested to hear about experiences about reproductive health education, not only in Somalia but in other countries. Which countries face the greatest challenges in this regard? What approaches have worked well, and what lessons can we share?

What do we know about the most effective ways to educate girls about reproductive health from an early age? What information should they receive, at what age, and how can we ensure that education is appropriate to their stage of development and cultural context?

What roles can schools, families, midwives and other health workers play? How can we help girls feel comfortable discussing reproductive health, asking questions and seeking advice when they are concerned about symptoms or changes in their bodies?
