mHEALTH-INNOVATE (72) Using mobile phones for patient education

3 June, 2022

Neil and all,

I feel this is a very important initiative. For years, I have wondered how to harness mobile phones. My interest is in patient education as well as education of healthcare professionals. The main stumbling block that I see is how to ensure quality of the interactions. Also, how to find the correct audience.

I look forward to working with the HIFA mHEALTH-INNOVATE working group. Once Covid is under better control, I hope to return to Rwanda and/or Ethiopia. On the ground is a better place to get a feel for what is needed. I noticed we did have a few people from LMICs. It would be nice to have a community health care worker and local patients to give us some insight.

Thanks again for all that you are doing,

Michele

HIFA profile: Michele Meltzer is a rheumatologist at Thomas Jefferson University with a special interest in increasing access to rheumatology care in resource limited areas. Because of the scarcity of rheumatologists, many healthcare professionals, patients and politicians do not understand that there is a diagnosis and treatment for many diseases which cause pain, disability and even death. As president of Rheumatology for All, Inc. she has already participated in educational programs in East Africa. She is a member of the HIFA mHEALTH-INNOVATE working group.
