I would like to add some more historical reading for this group if they are interested, in the parallels of the present day Opioid industrial complex and the past, in the form of Smoke and Ashes by Amitav Ghosh. This is a systematic documentation of the history of the Opioid trade which led to the First Opium War which was fought in the mid 1800s between China and the British Empire. The Qing government's campaign to protect its population by prohibiting trade in opium, and destroying opium stocks owned by British merchants and the British East India Company resulted in the British forcing a war and demanding that the Chinese to pay reparations and allow the opium trade.
