Spotlight: Group B Strep (54) What are the common myths about GBS disease? (4)

14 July, 2026

Thank you for bringing up these myths, Neil. I concur fully about the stigma they can cause for parents.

I’d like to comment in regards to the first myth that, while GBS is naturally found in the digestive and lower reproductive tracts of both men and women, parents should be aware that bacteria can be passed between sexual partners, including through oral contact. We include this information in our brochure https://www.groupbstrepinternational.org/uploads/9/9/9/4/99946050/gbs_br... so that parents can be empowered to make informed choices, such as after testing negative, a new partner, etc. This also brings to mind the question, “Would it be best to avoid kissing young babies on their lips?”

Sincerely,
Marti
