Towards an Epidemiology of Compassion,
A Special Issue

By now, you've probably heard about our work on measuring compassion (https://www.taskforce.org/face-epi-of-compassion/) and identifying methods for 'scaling-up' compassionate systems within global health. �� You've likely read our Epidemiology of compassion: A literature review (https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2...) and attended one of our convenings on the subject. �� If not, you've perhaps perused the summary reports of those gatherings on our website (https://www.taskforce.org/face/) . ��
So, it's become clear to you too that we have a gap! Most compassion science focuses on the capacity of individuals to extend it, yet we need to amplify multidirectional compassion throughout organizations and society at large. ��
In discussion with many of you, we've come to believe that epidemiology, the science that undergirds global health, offers the tools needed to study and understand factors contributing to compassion and wellbeing at the population level. ��
You might then ask, where does all this investigation lead? To the need for a foundational, collective, and written body of work, which as the special issue title implies, will advance us Towards an Epidemiology of Compassion. Here's what you need to know and how to get involved!
�� Where will it be published? The International Journal of Wellbeing (https://www.internationaljournalofwellbeing.org/index.php/ijow)
�� When is an abstract due? By April 15, 2025 using �� this form! (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSebqiX-ApEfULJRnwJPD2QYD83Ob1TV...) ��
�� When will I know if I've been accepted? April 30, 2025
�� When is my full-length manuscript due? September 1, 2025
�� When will it be released? November - December 2025
�� How much will it cost? Nothing! If accepted, we'll cover all publication-associated fees.
�� Beyond writing and submitting, what else will I need to do?
1) Discuss with the editors as requested,
2) Revise based on feedback from editors and peer-reviewers, and
3) Agree to peer review 1-2 other papers for the special issue.

How do I know if I should submit?
✅ You are able to write a formal manuscript in English for peer-reveiwed publication.
✅ Your manuscript broadly addresses aspects of measuring, understanding, or conceptualizing compassion at the population level (e.g., organization, community, society, or system).
✅ You have the capacity to author or co-author a full-length manuscript in the next 6 months. Multiple authors are welcome and encouraged!

✅ Your work has not been submitted elsewhere and will not be if accepted for this special issue.
